"Daddy, I Find You There"

You were not a gardener, leaving the
finer points of horticulture to my mother,
while you created the walls, fences and structures
that formed the bones of her gardens.
And, yet, you had your favorites - plants you championed,
perhaps because of the persistent nature of these volunteers -
plants that were to be left undisturbed by all resident gardeners,
well beyond the confines of picket fences and garden walls.
In a glimpse of the first spring violet,
unfurling above heart-shaped leaves,
In the fragrance of lily of the valley,
its bells pealing out spring's intentions,
In the pure white, perfect rays of an
unkempt drift of wild daisies,
In the cheery sunshine of the much-maligned
dandelion, which you defended,
I find you there.
As the spring sun warms my aging joints,
As the wild birds sing songs of courtship,
As your favorite 'Big Boy' tomatoes set fruit,
And as the little dog, you so loved, watches me garden...
Daddy, I find you there.

The fact that your dad created the bones of the garden, as a non-gardener, speaks highly of his character. Fond remembrances. Very touching, Deb. Hope you're doing well. Hows the nursery? Keeping you and Lucy busy, still?
Thank you and I do find the memories stirred by the act of gardening today, provide constant solace.
Not quite as busy at the nursery, but busy enough to keep us occupied three days a week. Lately, I've been getting outside to prune and weed display beds out in front of the garden center... which I love!
Plus, it's getting close to "crunch time" for the July newsletter... which entails about 4 days of non-stop writing from my home office. Spent all day yesterday mowing and planting at my Mom's house. Again, Lucy was present in her usual supervisory role. So, yes - pretty dang busy!
I look forward to seeing how your landscape projects are progressing, especially those new stone-tiered beds.
I seem to be out of town more often than at home. I hope to be home for a little while next week! I haven't "gardened to my heart's content," yet this summer! Working on the fly, instead.
You won't believe what I planted in my front tier! ;-) I'll be posting when I get home.
Shady - I'll be looking forward to the gardening updates!
