"Old Friends in Autumn"
By Deb Lambert
Autumn lingers,
casting her jewel-toned exuberance before us,
like an oriental carpet.
She exhales a crisp, clear breath,
driving away merciless summer.
Autumn is extravagant in her generosity...
she is nature’s last fling of the season,
reveling in bright blue skies,
torrential rains, bright sun,
unpredicted rainbows,
gusty winds, luminous sunsets,
sudden frost, unexpected warmth
and harvest moons.
Autumn is a time of remembrance
a time to reminisce about life, love and friends.
For many of us, our personal seasons
of spring and summer are cherished memories
as we enter the autumn of our lives.
And what of old friends who drifted away
or who are no longer among us?
Geography and life often intervene,
accounting for loss of contact.
But, they, along with friends who have left
this physical world, are never far away...
as close as a treasured memory,
as near as a conversation.
Old friends may leave this mortal moil,
but their essence lives on in the hearts
and memories of everyone they touched
along life’s pathways...
they live on, within us.
Autumn is a time of reflection,
a review of seasons past
and a review of lives well-lived.
Well-lived lives of absent friends
figure prominently in such reflective times.
Their individuality, intelligence, humor,
unselfishness and myriad other virtues
form that composite picture.
Yes, in autumn’s reminiscences,
old friends live on, become timeless.
So, hike through the leaves,
rejoice in the remembrances
of old friends in autumn.
